Melina Kanakaredes, the female star of CSI: NY, decided not to renew his contract with the series and will not appear in Season 7.

Detective Mac Taylor has lost his longtime teammate. Present since the first season of CSI: NY, Melina Kanakaredes, Stella Bonasera aka Detective, will not return in September, CBS announced.

“We hoped that Melina comes back next season but we respect his decision to move forward,” said the chain in a statement. “We are extremely grateful for his incredible talent and his invaluable contribution to the success of the series and we will not forget.”

For its part, Melina Kanakaredes merely stated: “I’ve made some loyal friends and extraordinary during my six seasons working on CSI: NY and I will cherish forever.”

CBS declined to comment on a possible short return Melina Kanakaredes in season 7 to close the history of his character. But according to Entertainment Weekly, the actress will not return next season and Sela Ward (recently seen in Dr. House) is already in pole position to succeed him as the female star of the series alongside Gary Sinise (Detective Mac Taylor) .

The departure of Melina Kanakaredes comes as other stars of the CBS flagship franchise recently left their respective series. Liz Vassey (CSI) and Eddie Cibrian (CSI: Miami) have in fact also decided not to renew their contract.
