With his dry wit and impeccable style, James Bond has been defying death and ruining the plans of megalomaniacal madmen over 50 years, always at the service of Queen and country. Since its first appearance in a novel in 1953, becoming one of the most successful franchises in movie history, Bond traveled to more exotic locations, dated more women, more deadly traps escaped and saved the world more times than any another secret agent, real or fictional.
Much of the early life of James Bond remains gloomy, which is convenient to an undercover agent. There is no idea or even the date of his birth – the first possibilities suggested several dates in the 1920s, implying that the stories are actually current events from decades past. His father, a Scotsman, worked for a British arms manufacturer and was killed while mountain climbing with the mother of Bond, who was Swiss. James was only 11 at the time. The orphan attended several prestigious schools before enlisting in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, where he rose to the rank of commander. After the war, he joined the British Secret Intelligence Service – SIS (in English), also known as MI6, the English abbreviation of the Sixth Division of the Military Intelligence Directorate. His first two assignments were murders, which led to his permanent appointment as Agent “00″, an agent with a license to kill in the service. And how was the seventh agent with this designation, he became Agent 007.
Bond is no mere foot soldier. His undercover assignments have taken him to exotic locales that include volcanic islands, Las Vegas, Paris, India, Azerbaijan, Tokyo and even a space station in orbit. He usually operates under another identity, and the most common is the representative of Universal Exports. His charm and charisma are reinforced by his taste for fine suits, fast cars and your drink: a dry martini shaken, not stirred. Bond’s missions put you in touch with both figures sophisticated elites as with individuals who live in marginality. In both situations, he repeatedly demonstrated (and overcome) his one true weakness can not resist a beautiful woman.
While Bond is a gifted athlete and well trained in martial arts, he does not need to rely on his wits and physical prowess. The Q Branch of MI6 always provides useful devices to 007, usually in the form of a common object that hides an explosive, a weapon or other item essential. He also has access to heavily modified experimental vehicles and often carries an escape device or a means of communicating with your contacts in an emergency. And finally, when all else fails, he can use the Walther PPK .32 revolver that holds in his shoulder holster (even though it makes exceptions to other weapons, if necessary use them).
Bond’s missions vary greatly, but one thing always remains: MI6 put into action when nothing else matters but to accomplish the task. Bond is regarded as a “blunt instrument” of the Crown, someone able to complete tough tasks regardless of political consequences, financial or personal. When the world’s fate is at stake, his superiors know that he can not waste time worrying about offending an ambassador or blowing up an embassy.
