What is geek chic? It is a style, a trend, a movement, a cultural moment or just a love affair with all that is not cool? First of all, what is a geek? If you discuss this definition, you must be one of them.
A geek has an obsessive and obscure knowledge about mass media, pop culture and technology. The geeks are usually smart, passionate about things that most people do not care, and most of them tend to be the first buyers are released when the latest electronic gadgets. The billboard of geeks talk about the latest cast of the film adaptation of “Watchmen” and not about who will win the Super Bowl.
But what does it mean to be geek chic? Think about the character of Willow Alyson Hannigan on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” During the first few seasons, she is a geek, and her hair and her clothes reflect that. After a few seasons, his hair is cut and dyed a reddish hue and vibrant, and her costume is more modern. Voila! From geek to geek chic. She is still the same Willow, with the same interests, but now longer produced.
Want some more examples of geek chic? Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, the series “Flight of the Conchords,” indie bands originating from New Zealand to star in her own show on HBO. Geek curiosity: Bret attended “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring”. The fans agreed, despite the fact he never spoke, and gave him the nickname “Figwit” which means “Frodo is Great – Who is That?” (Frodo is the maximum – what is this?). Peter Jackson has some words for Figwit in “The Return of the King” as a nod to the fans.
Tina Fey, former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and the essence of the scenes from “Mean Girls” and “30 Rock” is an example of “girl geek chic”. She is brunette, smart, modern glasses, his cultural satire is acidic and fun and did theater when I was in high school. And who would not want to appear there with her?
Andy Samberg, also coming from SNL, carries a silly smile on his face and some sketches and digital experience. View on the YouTube hit “Lazy Sunday”, through “Sloths” and “Laser Cats”, and also a certain “Special Box”. Rivers Cuomo, frontman of Weezer, playing Dungeons & Dragons. How strange: Vin Diesel too. Quentin Tarantino’s films are celebrated by geeks. Elvis Costello, Justin Long, Parker Posey, Jack Black, Beck and Adam Brody on the list of celebrities geek chic. Natalie Portman also gained fame for “little geek-girl” with her role in the trilogy of “Star Wars”.
The visual geek chic is the easy part. Take a few key pieces of typical geek wardrobe and wear them with attitude and style to mark presence. Not because you’re completely clueless or is out of fashion, or because you can not afford a product of Ralph Lauren: you are because you want to geek. Think big sunglasses, suits with striped trousers and fair, several sweaters, pocket protectors – a trendy vibe what nerd. Thinkgeek shirts like that of (in English) with slogans like “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1″ (“There’s no place like 127.0.0.1″ – the IP of your machine) are successful. It’s geek to recover the identity as not only meaningful, but also stylish.
